Montrail Excellerance Review

"These are actually a trail-running shoe with added support. They have some boot-like features that make them well-suited for lightweight hiking. I even used these for two weeks of light-weight backpacking in Glacier National Park, although I think I was pushing them a bit. These boots were named an "Editors Choice" by Backpacker Magazine....which initially raised my eyebrows. They are ankle high, with a webbing strap that adds a suprising amount of support. They feature Gore-Tex XCR membrane to keep your feet dry....and do get a bit clammy, but still better than a big heavy leather boot. I enjoyed the freedom from heavy weight hikers, and I will use these every time I hike in an area that they can handle. I could see these being ideal for hiking in the midwest, or anywhere where there is a layer of topsoil. These are made of lightweight materials....yet are still very tough. For anyone wishing to hike light, these may be something you want to try out. You can't get much lighter than these, and still maintain such an impressive amount of support. I use these for running too....and they work well for trudging through snow, and running on uneven trails."
