"These are essentially goretex socks, worn over a regular pair of socks. I originally bought them for bicycle commuting in the rain, but discovered they come in handy in the backcountry as well. After an insect bite on my foot that caused it to swell up too big to fit in my boots, I did the last 5 days of the trip (including crossing two passes in the high Sierras) with these things and a pair of Teva sandals. That included stream crossings, snowfield crossings, etc. They're also good in any situation where you want to keep your socks & feet dry when your shoes aren't necessarily waterproof (such as cross-country skiing, etc.)"
