"The REI EveningStar has solved a problem that had been driving me nuts for well over a year. Like many, I enjoy outdoor photography. Unfortunately, my camera of choice is a Pentax 6x7. Not only are these medium format camera and lenses larger and heavier than 35mm, the system also requires a medium-weight tripod to insure that the quality the of 6x7 format is not compromised. So, how could this equipment (and all the other "normal" day/overnight supplies) be carried comfortably? What makes the REI EveningStar pack different?

1. Most packs are now top-loaders. This makes bad sense for normal backpacking, with camera equipment it is a disaster. There is little that is more frustrating than digging through a top loader looking for a lens. The EveningStar is one of the very few packs of the correct size (about 3200 ci) and quality with a STRONG and FULL panel opening. Camera gear is automatically laid out for easy and highly visible access.
2. The EveningStar carries a tripod with ease. My tripods, a 5.5 pound Bogen 3021 and a 7.5 pound Benbo have odd shapes and never seem to attach properly to a pack. If they are easy to remove and attach, they flop around and shift. If securely attached, the tripod takes forever to get off and on. The EveningStar's panel is uncluttered and strong. There are four simple 4-way patches on the corners. The tripods are easily attached using these patches and two quick-clip straps. The tripod is super secure yet needs only a mere 5 seconds to unload or load. There are no dizzy array of buckles, loops, hooks, etc. to clutter up the design. Moreover, the tripods are out of the way, they don't impair access to the pack while attached.
3. The pack is really versatile. It has a simple but very effective compression system. Unlike many packs, a less-than-full load does not shift and sink to the bottom.

I should note that although photo-specific packs are available, they don't handle much more than cameras. Room for the other necessities (water, food, sweater, hat, etc.) don't exist. They are fine for a stroll through town or short walks, but certainly not for long day hikes or overnights. The EveningStar provides a simple and efficient solution.

I have found nothing as efficient as the EveningStar for photographers carrying no-compromise equipment over the trail. I highly recommend it. The price (as of June 1998) is $160 and comes in Regular and Large."
