"I recently purchased a pair of limmer lightweights and find them to be the most comfortable, best constructed boot i have yet owned. The design and craftsmanship are unequaled in my limited experience (vasque sundowner, tecnica shasta tcy, asolo, dunham). The fit is incredible as the heel pocket is designed to snug around your achilles tendon and lock down the heel itself, and as Karl Limmer told me himself, "it's amazing what 50 cents worth of foam rubber can do, I'm always surprised that my competitors don't copy it." These boots are thick nubuck leather outers with a glove lined leather interior, waterproof without the GD Gortex. These are very substantial boots, however, the name lightweight is relative to the Limmer standard boot. At my boot size, 13W, these boots weight 2 lbs. 1 oz per boot. I also tried a pair of the mid-weights for a comparison, they weighed 2 lbs. 7 oz. per boot, a little heavier, but a more substantial boot all around, beautiful full grain leather with a heavier outsole, truly a work of art. I opted for the lightweights only because of the weight, my intended use is dayhiking/weekend backpacking, but if i spent more time on the trail i would have bought the midweights.
I'll admit that limmers product is expensive but i hope that just when these boots are broken in i won't have to dispose of them because the sole is worn out, like all of the others i've owned. will post an update in the future. btw i bought the limmer boots because i originally bought the limmer oxford shoe several months ago...they are the most comfortable shoe i own (including several pairs of allen-edmonds), with a very wide toe box and impeccable construction...they are the reason i bought the boots!
Customer Service:
i have spent over 3 hours on the phone with Karl Limmer himself talking boots, fit, care...you won't find that at vasque or any where else...these guys are really good!"
"I bought a pair of Limmer Lightweights on the strength of a review in Backpacker magazine in 2000. Having never purchased a product that well made, it took longer than it normally should have to break them in. I recommend a hot day and keep applying the Limmer boot grease till it stops drawing in. Now those boots are like my best friend-no adventure is complete without them. They are definitely worth the cost."
"I recently bought a pair of Limmer's. Though expensive they are the best boot I have ever owned. The construction of the boot is without a doubt the best I have ever seen. The comfort and fit after the breakin period is amazing. If your into hiking these are the boots to own."
"I love my Limmers so much, I can't wait to get another pair! The only problem with this, is that after two years of use, I just don't need another. These boots are really just starting to break in. I cleaned them up the other night, treated them with some Limmer Bootgrease, and they almost look new again. If you are searching for a truly well made boot that will last you a long time, look no further. I purchased the off-the-shelf Lightweights. Although most of the talk about Limmers is of the custom boot (which I am sure are without equal) the off-the-shelf models are excellent. I searched high and low for the best boot I could find. Nothing even came close to these (without going to a custom boot maker). The construction is super solid. The Norwegian Welt stiching is as tough as it gets. The uppers are one piece leather construction. The only seam is on the instep, and it is stitched with six seams! My boots took a while to break in, but they now feel fantastic, and are looking even better with age. If you are looking for quality, you cannot go wrong with these boots!"
"These boots get a 10 out of 5 for durability and construction. However, they get a 3 out of 5 for comfort and a 2 out of 5 for dry feet. The leather is so thick that feet like mine soak the boots from the inside out and the boot is heavy by midday from being wet. They don't breath much. That being said, I really beat these to hell in the White Mountains and they looked like new. So thumbs up on that front. However, like I said, they take 200 miles to break in and even start to be comfortable. But then, you'll still have many miles left in them, unlike most other boots that are worn out by the time you break them in. I still think chambrelle and gore-tex is the best way to have dry, comfortable feet. These don't have that."
"I think these boots are the best i have owned and i have owned a bunch. Like a glove I say! Throw away the scarpas and forget every ratings list you've read. These boots stand alone without peer."
"I bought a pair of ultra lightweight Limmers 4 years ago. They are the most comfortable hiking boots I own. I have never had problems with water leaking in after stream crossings or bad weather and they are great for all seasons. They do take a little time to break in, but it's worth the wait. My only problem now is that they need to be resoled. It's definitely worth the cost since they are already broken in and should easily last another 4 or more years. Now, I am ready to buy some lightweights."
