"While we haven't owned our Limmers quite as long as the other reviewer (John), I have to agree with everything he said. These are some seriously excellent boots. My husband and I each bought a pair in 1997 (around $300 apiece from LLBean) with wedding gift certificates. We both have wide feet & the Limmers accommodate better than anything else we tried. Fit was a big priority, but we also wanted well-designed, quality-made boots that could be resoled...and that could make it through a two-week trek as easily as an urban snowstorm. That's what we got with the Limmers. Break-in time is longer than with a lighter-weight product, but I have found them well worth the investment so far. Also, because they are leather-lined, they never get slimey inside, and haven't that nasty sneaker odor you get with synthetic-lined products. I am looking forward to wearing them into my old age! Limmer rocks!"

"I have owned Limmer boots since 1965 or so...I still have the
same pair, tought they have been resoled. They have never leaked, tough I apply Limmer's special treatment regularly...they have stayed nice and soft and comfortable. I have used they for day hikes and 7-10 treks through the White Mts in New Hampshire. While they tend to be heavier than other boots (approx 5#) they also hold up well on the roughest terrain and nothing seems to hurt them...regardless of how clumsy I have been. They have always protected my feet and angles...and still feel great. The only downside is their expense...current price is about $400...somewhat more than the $32.50 I paid for my custom made pair. I would reccomend them to anyone who wants the best."

Check out the new limmer boot site. I have the light weight, which really does not do the boot justice, because I have had this boot for 3 years now and will never go back to any others. These are tough, can handle the rock pile ( Mt Washington ) with ease, and any other trails you have in mind. BEST BOOT AROUND!!!"

"I will continue the Limmer LoveFest. I have had a pair of Limmer midweights for three years. Most other boot companies would call my boots heavyweights.
They are durable, supportive and comfortable in a germanic sort of way. Unlike most current hiking boots they have a firm, leather insole. No padding to speak of. They will take several weeks to break in. They gradually mold to your foot (or your foot molds to them. Once they do, you will be hard pressed to go back to any other boot."

"I have to agree with the others that have written about Limmer Boots. I purchased my standard boots about 2 years ago. I paid just over $300 for them and they are worth every dime. I waited almost 6 months for them to arrive due to size 11- 1/2 wide feet. In thinking I would have waited even longer.
Breaking time was 2-3 weeks following what limmer instructed. Either that or it took my feet that long to break in. I have hiked, climbed, played in the snow, mud and rain with them. They are tops in my boot book. They are a little worn on the toes and sides, but still like new to me. My next boots may just be the new lightweights or even a custom pair."

"I own both the shelf Limmer "Standards" and the Limmer "Lightweights".
I bought the Standards a decade ago to attend the NOLS Instructors Course. The Lightweights were purchased last year. Both models are absolutely THE FINEST PAIR OF BOOTS AVAILABLE! The Standards allowed me to carry pack loads that ranged from 65 to 80 lbs in very rugged terrain with no problem. After many serious trips, they still can be cleaned up to look almost new! The Lightweights were purchased a year ago and I took them on a 14 day backpacking trip the day after buying them. They were superbly comfortable and supported my feet while carrying 55 lb. loads. Their name could be confusing for a Limmer "virgin" - although these boots are much ligher in weight than the Standards, they should NOT to be considered light duty. They are more sturdily built than most other brands of boots on the market and certainly feature the best construction. I have been so impressed with Limmer products that I just ordered and have received a new pair of Limmer "Walkers". These are the original Limmer "Tyrolean walking shoes" that were so sought after by Harvard students in the 1920's. They were the first shoes made by Peter Limmer Sr. after establishing his shop in America. I got them so that even when wearing "city clothes" or attending certain functions, I can still be shod in Limmer footwear. The Walkers fit and look GREAT. ...now for ordering a pair of custom Limmers!..."

"I purchased a pair of Standards off the shelf last year and must say they are worth the $300 paid. They allowed me to bound down shale talus and scramble on abrasive carbonates all summer. The only two complaints I have is that the boot toes are pretty scarred and there is a delamination of the leather footboard on my left boot. I slapped on some urethane and pressed down the nap, and they look new (er). I also squished this stuff into the gap above the Vibram sole and all is well. If you want tried and true construction and appreciate resoleability, then these are the boots for you. They are pricy, but my field partner who was with me every step of the way had to toss the Nike boots he was using."

"I have a love hate relationship with my Limmer’s. My feet are very wide and I bought the off the shelf boots. They fit ok for walking around or easy hikes, however they kill my feet during rugged hikes. Yesterday I did ten miles on a rocky trail in the Bob Marshal Wilderness and today my toes are red and bruised.
The boots are of superior construction and clearly an excellent product. My advise to anyone with unusual sized feet is to order them custom made."

"I have had my Limmer customs since 1989 when I was a caretaker for the Green Mountain Club in Vermont. They cost under $300 and took about 6 months to receive. Now they are just under $600 and take 4 years. All I can say is that mine were worth it, by far the best boots I can imagine. I am now in the market for a lighter weight pair of Limmers, and looking forward to many years with them. (My customs are still in great shape, but a little much for day hikes sometimes). One of a kind boots, I can't recommend the investment--if you are serious about boots--enough."

"It is important to know that Limmer Boots is a family run business. When you go into their shop, you talk with Peter. Karl, who formerly worked side by side with Peter in the cobbler shop, now travels around the country showcasing the best boots in the world.
You can be assured that the stock boots meet the benchmark in quality of the custom boots. The stock boots are manufactured by a family run footware manufacturer in Bavaria, Meindle Company, and the Limmer-Meindle relationship spans multiple generations. Karl and Peter personally oversee the design and quality of all of their boots - custom and stock. They are recognized around the world for both quality, but also good business practices. If you ever have an issue, you will end up speaking most likely with the owners - Karl or Peter - that says it all."

"Outstanding!!!
1988 - I had my feet measured for a custom pair of Limmers. Picked them up one year later during a trip to North Conway - did not even need to break them in. These boots have been put through 15 years of hell. Crampons, snowshoes, winter, summer, spring, fall - canoe trips, climbing trips - everything. Finally this year the soles started to separate and water was seeping in. They also had no lugs left on the bottom. I have mailed them off to Peter Limmer and Sons to have new soles put on and cannot wait for them to come back to me. Does not surprise me that there is a 4 year waiting list to have these custom boots made now.... I'd buy them again for sure.. "Go hard or go home!" Steve"

"I purchased a pair of midweight off-the-shelf Limmer boots after giving up on standard-brand boots (last year I had not one, but two pairs of boots from a well-known and regarded firm start disintegrating just as they broke in, a most frustrating experience). The midweight Limmers are a heavy boot, even more so than I anticipated, but I love the support they provide and the quality of manufacture is impeccable. I'm glad that I did not go for the standard Limmer, as that would have been overkill for the hiking and light backpacking I undertake. The combination of waterproofing, high gusset and well-sealed stitching makes for a boot that keeps the feet reasonably dry through wet trail conditions; as a corollary, if the boots get wet, they dry quite quickly. The deep heel pocket combined with aggressive lacing (runner's knot, usually) is effective in keeping my feet well-positioned. The fit is quite snug without being excessively so on my medium-width feet -- no boot-bang noted so far, despite the fact that these are a slightly smaller size than I usually take. Break-in was done slowly and carefully and should not be rushed -- these boots are far tougher than most feet! At some point I will take them to an expert bootfitter to have a couple of areas worked on with the rubbing bar, but this is due to problems with my feet, not the boots. These are a fine product, not overhyped, and I only wish I had the patience to wait for a custom pair. I hike the Catskills & 'Dacks primarily but I can't think of many settings other than technical environments where these boots would be out of place."

"amen to that and I agree. They can also send you a catalog that describes how to trace your own foot. Then you can call them and order the correct size. They'll describe in detail how to make sure they fit, and you can try as many pair as you like. As long as they're in perfect condition (wear them indoors), you can just send them back and keep the ones that fit.
they are a hardworking, outstanding group of people who are dedicated to their craft. They make incredible boots. They can be resoled and will probably last 10-20 years with good care. Do yourself a favor--get a pair of their boots. You'll have happy feet and you'll be supporting a group of warm-hearted, dedicated craftsmen. People like this are getting harder and harder to find. And make sure if you are ever within an hour or two of intervale, NH, that you stop in their shop. The building is (this might be a little off) a couple hundred years old, they make their custom boots right there (4 year waiting period, as there are only two people that do it), they have all sorts of history scattered about the store and hanging from the walls (their original leather ski boot, the first patent for a leather ski boot filed in the US, and HUNDREDS of pictures of their boots all over the world, sent in by happy customers). If he is there, Peter Limmer himself will kindly show you around the shop, show you how and where the boots are made, and chat with you about boots for hours. Its an experience unto itself. These people are rediculously dedicated to what they do, and driven to inproving your life, not just selling a product. Its refreshing. You're not just buying a pair of boots, you're enriching your life. Find them on the web at www.limmerboot.com. happy trails, keegan"

"I have extremely hard-to-fit feet (long, narrow, and "low volume"), and every pair of boots I've owned in the last 40 years has been a compromise -- until I discovered Limmer. I bought a pair of stock "lightweight" boots from Limmer about two years ago, and they are the most comfortable and rugged boots I've ever owned. Now, halfway through the four year waiting list, I'm more anxious than ever to get my custom Limmers. These folks are truly dedicated to top quality."

"If Limmer customs were $1,000 I would order a pair. I inherited a pair last year that fit me wonderfully. Peter himself fitted my Mom back in the mid 60s. They saw irregular use through 3 decades and no use in the last 10 years. I hiked in them for the first time, having not even worn them around the house, just 3 days ago to Tuckerman Ravine. They are rock hard from sitting around unconditioned, but not a blister or sore spot and I was noticebly surer under foot than just a week before with my "other" boots. I am happy to say that I don't anticipate having to buy a new pair of boots for a few decades, if ever again."

"I joined the AMC Trail Crew in 1971, buying a pair of Dunhams rather than Limmers. A week of trailwork and hiking did the Dunhams in so I got Limmers and have loved my pairs (3) ever since. Limmers are the choice of boots by the AMC Trail Crew, Hut Crew and many others working in the mountains.
I've worn my boots day in and day out, hiking, trailwork, carpentry, gardening, around town....they fit like old slippers and are so comfortable. Like my Volvo cars, they last and last, especially if you get them rejuvenated before you tear up the mid-sole beyond repair. It's not uncommon to see many people around the White Mts. and elsewhere with a pair 15-20 years old and still going strong. My last pair, regrettably, were used beyond repair by the Limmers, so I used some small nails and Shoe-goo to make them go another few years. Then I bought light weight boots at a local sporting goods store. They are OK around town but they kill my feet in the woods. So I'm currently looking into buying some off the shelf Limmer boots or used ones, as I can't wait 4 years. Don't get the Chevy or Ford quality hiking boots...go for the BMW ones (Limmers) and you'll never go back to the others! Foo!"

"I am sitting at my computer with my Limmers on, need I say more?
These are a boot of boots, some will call them the BMW of boots, you could say that, but they look great after years of use and abuse. At $300+ for a new pair and customs being a 4 Year wait, they are worth it!! I own the Standard boot, and the light weight boot, both are tops! Having survived trail work, multiple hikes up Mt Washington, Moosalakie (SP), Cardigan, Greylock, Monadnock and others these boots are still going. I need to work on my boot care a little bit, but they don't leak, feet are comfortable and happy :-) I even proposed to my fiance wearing my Limmers! If I am hiking you will see my Limmers on my feet, like a American Express card....don't leave home without them. My next purchase might just be the Walkers....or a pair of custom boots! *See you on the trail*"

"Thank the Lord I've never worn anything but. My Father was fitted for his first pair by the first Peter..that pair went over 30 years and 14,000 miles between the two of us. Peter (the son) measured my father's second pair and my mother's first. I was fitted by Karl and Peter (the third) made them. Over 3000 miles later they still have decades to go and I'll only give them to my sons as well. If you can stand the wait they are well worth it and will serve you for generations."

"Owned my custom Limmers since 1980. Just had them resoled about two years ago. These are fortresses for the feet. Great if you happen to have to stand in place at a work station as well as for walking for miles. You might be able to get me out of my Limmers...at gun point."

"Bomb-proof construction. Comfortable. Fitted at the store (served tea and cookies by Mrs. Limmer) in August 1969, a "Woodstock trip" from Denver. Standard boot is still going strong. Will need new soles sometime soon. Ordering light weight model. Buy the boots. Be patient with break-in."

"AMC crew 2006. Bought the boots after my first paycheck. Packed 50+ that day and they killed. Now they are like a dream within a dream. They make me want to hike longer, further and carry more freshies! Thank you Limmer and sons, from the bottom of my feet!"
Kevin, 0/0/00
"I bought my first pair after
joining the AMC Trail Crew in 1973. Hey Reuben. They served me well all that year. I got my second pair in 1982, after someone stole my first set from my car. I hope he has blisters and can't walk. The pair I bought in 82 is still with me. I finished the NH 4000 footer club with them on. Buy them..."

"I bought my one (and only pair of Limmers about 1969). They cost around $65. I have spent many months living in them on trails in California and upstate New York. I had them re-soled about 2002. They wear like a dream."
Dwain, 0/0/00
"I have a 20 something year old pair of Standards that I inherited from a friend at the AMC. 4 seasons of trail crew later, they are still in amazing condition and fit like a dream. My first year of crew I had a pair of good-quality boots of another brand that died a terrible death in just 9 weeks in the woods. If you're serious about boots and want something you can wear all-day, every day, no matter what you're doing, get your self a pair of Limmers."
Michael Eric Berube, 0/0/00
"I bought a pair of off the shelf Standards at the Intervale, NH store in 1984 a few months before a summer long trip in the Rockies. I wore them later when enlisted and stationed in Alaska in preference over my duty 'mountain' boots. I had them resoled, stretched a little and a padded tongue added in 2005. I've worn them nearly daily (or at least several times a week) since 1984 and now when my Standards would not be appropriate dress, I'm usually wearing my pair of Limmer Oxfords! My Standards are just now starting to develop a crack on the inside wall of my right foot that will force me to go buy another pair and give these a well deserved rest after 23 faithful years of service. Some people worry about spending over $300 for a pair of off the shelf boots, but at just over $13/year, I think it is money well spent!"
Don Cox, 0/0/00
"I have been using a pair of the Limmer Lightweights for the past three years backpacking and climbing class II & III routes in the High Sierra's. The seemingly endless talus fields encountered here can easily shred a pair boots in as little as two weeks. Not so for my Limmers. While they have taken a beating and a few of the lugs have torn off, it's just "cosmetic" damage and expect these boots to last many more trips. They are comfortable, waterproof, excellent in loose, steep descents and I would not trade them for any other boot. They are simply the best backpacking / light mountaineering boots in the world!"
Olly, 0/0/00
"The best boots I have ever worn.. standard or mid-weight (retirement boots!) both have served me well for numerous seasons on the AMC trail crew and beyond into Wyoming and Colorado. I ahve seen so many people come onto crews with some out-of-the-box glued boot (cough*dwain*), only to find that they are spending $150 every 3 weeks, while those with Limmers keep them for years and years.
Limmer boots are the only boots that have never given me blisters and nothing you put on your boots works better and smells better than Limmer boot grease. The quality and durability you get in this boot makes them a worth-while investment."
