"Spent a night here in early November. Nice shelter with east-facing views from the large deck. The Adirondack bench was exceptionally comfortable and the swing in the cooking pavilion was a nice touch.
The comments on the spring are accurate, but the alternative was to descend the steep trail at the Blackburn Center and then carry water 3.5 miles to this shelter. Bring your filter to the spring as there were a lot of floaters in the water.

"attempted to stay there...met some nice people...it was full, started to rain...hiked 1 mile back north to a meadow off to the left, look for the radio towers...."
"Very clean shelter, very nice. Wouldnt mind living here. Well maintained. Its just hotter than hell here. Would be nice if I was cold. So I am pressing on."
"Spent a lovely late afternoon in October 2001 on the swing by the covered picnic table catching up on my journal and reading. The caretaker for this airy shelter with skylight and porch left several Granny Smith apples that hit the spot. Scrounged enough wood for a lovely fire that I shared with another section hiker far into the night.

"The only reason this is not the best shelter on the AT is the spring. The shelter and cook shed are beautiful, with a very comfy bench and swing. Very clean, bright, and airy. Thanks PATC."
"Stayed one night at this shelter with Zen Monkey, Arkansas Traveler, Popa Bear 4-23-03. Great shelter, but wind blowing up the mountain causes rain or mist to cover those sleeping. Best bring a bivy sack "
"good shelter, you can stay in the covered picnic pavilion area if you want if there are alot of people there. Also, below the shelter is an area with spots for pitching a tent. be careful if you need to get water from the spring, it is a good 1/4 mile from the shelter, and DO NOT go at night, there are many rocks and boulders to watch out for. the spring was alright when I was there, there wasnt much water in the spring, but it might have been low because of the drought. it is an ok spring to use since there are any other water spots around there. be sure to filter the water and it is a pain if you have to lug alot of the water up the trail. the hike down and back to the spring is long and ALL UPHILL!!!! it is not alot of fuN!!!!"
