Recommended Activities The main park unit contains the reconstructed Fort Necessity, the Visitor Center, the historic Mount Washington Tavern, a picnic area, and hiking trails. In winter cross-country skiing is available on the trails, although they are not mechanically tracked or groomed.
The Mount Washington Tavern was originally built as a stagecoach stop for travellers along the National Road (1828-1855).
The Braddock Grave Unit is approximately 1.5 miles west of Fort Necessity on US Route 40.
Jumonville Glen is approximately seven miles northwest of Fort Necessity. It is the site of Washington's first encounter with the French.
From mid-June through Labor Day, a variety of talks, tours, and demonstrations are available at the fort, visitor center, and Mount Washington Tavern. A complete schedule of daily activities is available at the visitor center.
Junior Ranger Program: Children ages 6 to 12 may earn a patch and certificate by completing activity work sheets about the park. Children under 6 can earn a plastic badge and paper ranger hat. The program is available all year. Allow at least two hours. |
