"These boots have lasted me years and many miles over rough costal BC terrain. The only downside I can find is that the footbeds needed to be replaced with more comfortable/technical insoles after 1 year. Of course, these have next to no waterproofness by designas well."

"Beware of flaws with these boots. Less than one month after my purchase I noticed my left foot hurt after wearing these boots. Turns out the tongue wasn't sewn to the boot correctly, causing a crease, and therefore pain to the top of my foot. After returning the boot back to the store I noticed the same defect with the display model. Either a poor design or workmanship. When buying these boots carefully observe the stitching around the tongue. Most of all keep the original receipt and shoe box in case the boots need to be returned. Since the store didn't carry my size in another pair of Vegans I got a credit and bought another brand of boots elsewhere."

"Just a note regarding the last review of the vegan- Garmont builds their boots on what is called an asymmetrical last, meaning that all tongues in all of Garmont's boots will be "crooked". This is because our feet and legs are not symmetrical. If you look at your foot and leg in the mirror you'll see that the right and left half of each side of each leg is not the same- we slant. Garmont has built a boot to accomodate this slant- it is not a defect, in the boot nor in us! The reviewer probably did have a legitimate problem with his boots, but more than likely it was a matter of the wrong boot for his foot type."

"Garmont has brought out a new model under the same name. One of the odd things about it is sizing - I ended up choosing a size larger than the label said, so it's worth looking for notes and instructions if buying mail-order. There is a UK firm that sells Vegan Hikers with detachable waterproof socks; otherwise, check whether the model you are buying has a waterproof breathable membrane or not."

"The Vegan Hikers work great. I found them very comfortable and very sturdy. September 20th 2003 I summited Mt. Langley (4281m) via Tuttle Creek in them and they suffered only slight scuffing. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking a sturdy, flexible sole hiking boot."

"My wife and I each bought a pair of each of these shoes for a hike in Peru and they work wonderfully! They're very comfortable, supportive, and affordable."

"A nice, sturdy boot that looks good. My only complaint is that the original Vegan is pretty worthless in rain and snow. They don't breath well and are not waterproof at all. I do like them for dry conditions and plan to purchase the new Gore Tex model."

"I could not be more happy with my purchase of a pair of these pups several years ago - I've logged something like 350-400 mountain miles (almost all rocky terrain) over about 3 years, with essentially no maintenance at all, and my boots look great. No stitching problems, major scuffing problems, nothing. The synthetic materials just hold up so much better and require so less doting-over than leather. Definitely not waterproof, but surprisingly water-resistant without any urethane treatment - in mud and snow for sure. ."

"my only complaint would be that i had to purchase insoles for these boots to get the pampered cushy feeling that i like. in fact, they are now the most comfortable footwear i own. they really didn't even require any breaking in. i hiked in them a mere week after i bought them. i would easily throw down another ridiculous sum of money for a new pair (if they ever show signs of wearing out)."

"Bought the vegan hiking boots ages ago. Loved them until I tested their waterproof-ness. :) The bottoms fell off within a day after having to hike through a flooded area. They were so comfortable though compared to others I've tried, and definitely sturdy outside of a little water, that I'm going to get another pair."
