Water Filter Construction
Water Filters have become a necessary piece of equipment in the gear closet
today. There are many different types available which provide a
variety of levels of protection. The biggest variance is in how
much foreign matter a filter will remove from the water. There are
many similarities to the construction of water filters, however.
The working part of the filter, the filter element, often is the
difference between filtered and purified water. This is the mechanism
or material within a filter that removes microorganisms from your
water. The pores in the filter element, measured in microns, will
allow minuscule water molecules to pass through, but not larger
sized contaminants. Each filter is typically fitted with a pre-filter,
which is a screen that catches grains of sand and dirt before they
can invade the filter and clog the pores of the delicate filter
element.
Some filters add a purifier. The purifier is a filter that removes
or neutralizes viruses in addition to protozoa’s and bacteria, usually
with the addition of a carbon or iodine matrix.
