Tahoe Rim Trail - Summer 05
Now that I have learned how to navigate this site better, I thought I would repost a thread to this summers trip with a link to the trip.

I haven't gotten many responses despite my expectations. I have had one person back out and am willing to change the dates if that makes the trip available to others interested.

Hi, Rob. A lot of the CA TTers are on other trips at that time. That may affect responses.

TRT dates?
Hi Rob,
I signed up as "maybe" on your trip, although I'm very much interested in doing that trail this summer. I'm signed up for another trip planned for the begining of July, but, if that trip is canceled the due to high snow and/or runoff levels, I'll do the TRT instead. Is there anyway to change the dates of your trip to, say, August, if my first trip is a go?

And either way what trailhead and food drops are you planning for? I need help. I hear parking a car in Tahoe area is not safe and I might even use public transportation to get to and from there. I know there's a TART bus system working in the CA section and a couple of trailheads are easily reachable...

Talk to you later,
Hamid

Would love to do this but....
Hi Rob, I just moved to Truckee 3 months ago. I started a new job so not so much vacation. Can't do this whole trip. Already going on the Sierra Rendezvous trip middle of July but I might be able to do one of the weekends before that with you & catch up with you somewhere. Let's keep in touch here.

Hamid, why do you say there is trouble with the parking? I've never heard this but then again, I'm new up here.

Parking
I've heard from a couple of people, One from Truckee, that there has been several break-in's at the trailhead parking lots-at least in the CA section. Can't verify that yet, but I'll get back to you on that.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if I can do a little section hiking with you. If not that, maybe I can help out with a food drop of something like that.

Where do you live? A lot of left coasters are talking about doing a lot of weekend trips this spring to prepare for the big trips.

Hey Pepperdog...

Thanks for your offer in helping. I'll be formalizing my plans the month of February. I've been asked to move the hike to late July - perhaps around the 18th or so.

I live in Rocklin - just at the foothills down Hwy 80 toward Sacramento.

Hello Rob

I too would be willing to help out with any food drops for you..or I may even be able to do one or two nights out..pepperdog & Hikerchic let me know if you are going to do any part of this.

I live in Meyers....so it is really handy for me to get to most of the TH. Also if anyone would feel safer leaving there car parked at my house, I would be happy to let you do that. I have never heard of the TH parking with car break ins before...I have lived here for 18 years and have parked my car at a lot of the different TH parking lots and have never had a problem. Hamid do you know what TH are having the problems?

Parking
I'm not sure which parking lot, but I know someone got into my Jeep in Echo lake trailhead. Nothing stolen, well there was nothing in the topless Jeep, but I found footprints and trash inside. Or maybe it's the rangers who like to tell the storey to maybe alleviate the limited parking space.

Either way it's very nice of you to let us park in your place. That's another great thing about the backpacking folks. My friends at Truckee might let me park at their house and drop me off at my trailhead, but then they might not be there when I start my trip.

Rob, I live in Reno and would really be interested in doing at least part if not all of the TRT with you. It will depend on vacation hours and such. Also I could do supply drops or whatever to assist you in your endeavor.

Tahoe, thanks for your offer. I really appreciate it. My plans will be formalized by the end of the month - dates will be posted by the end of the week. I'm probably looking at mid to late July now.

Hi Rob,
I'm interested your TRT trip if it's still on. I'll be departing from Phoenix, AZ. It seems either Reno or Carson city is the nearest airport. What do you suggest?

wih... Reno! my 2cents...

This is great! We will be starting the TRT when you are finishing. Where do you plan to start, Tahoe City?
We will be taking a slower approach and avg. 12miles per day with a scheduled 13days... I'm hoping to get some fishing in and just have FUN!!! :)

Ken, although I'm not familiar with the area your itinery looks good and probably smarter approach. I just ordered a TRT map and a book, and hope to gather more info before I make decision on where to start and end along with other logistics. Let's keep in touch.

Thanks, Wih

Just let me know... Keep in mind that you are going to be in atleast 3 different National Parks each with there own rules, but not to worry if you bought a book, it should explain everything. Logistics, Logistics, Logistics...
Also, If you fly into Reno there is a shuttle that will take you to Tahoe City, State Line and Mt. Rose... all of which are close to TRT trail heads.

There are also several TT members that live around the Tahoe Area... Fuel/Food arrangements could be made with them?

join???
Ken and Wih,

Sorry, I haven't checked this thread in a while - I kind of gave up on finding company and planned to tackle this alone. Great to hear that there are others out there interested.

I'm curious, are you interested in any company? I could do either - alone or with a group. I don't mind slowing down a bit and enjoying the trip. Let me know. If now, I'll continue to keep my plans on the 17th.

I agree, Reno is definitely the better place to fly into. Cheaper airfares, transportation opportunities, etc.\

I have been piecing partners together for awhile... mostly hikers who will do sections, but not the whole thing. I can send you an Itiniary if you want?

Hi Ken and Rob,

I'm doing TRT loop - solo or with a small group - and of course latter is preferable. I been gathering information to decide when is the best time go, shuttle, where to start, food supply location and so on… I bought a TRT book and a Profile map from TRT web store. It seems mid June or September is the best time to go. I was hoping to go mid-June before mosquitoes will be an issue for me on the west shore as it is pretty wet over there in July (that's one reason I like to stay up higher elevation). But yesterday TRTA member informed that the entire trail will not be open by mid June. The west side of the trail will not be free from snow until Mid July. So, I'm willing to move to July. I understand that there is no perfect backpacking. Just make best of it.

Ken and Rob, would you give me your private email for further discussions. Here is mine: yogijinwon@yahoo.com

Cheers,
wih

Ken and Wih
Ken,

So as of now, you only have people meeting up with you for portions of the trip? If nothing else, we could at least spend a day or two of the hike together, then go at our own speed after that. It's your call. I haven't put in for the time off yet, but my office knows my intents sometime in July. I will have to finalize it soon.

Wih...

my e-mail is robertritchey@sbcglobal.net Your information is correct - a large section of the trail will not be passable mid-June. I'm pushing more for mid-July because I was even concered for early July snowpack still present. I can't push mine back to September as I have a trip to DC planned in October.

Hi YA robertr, are you headed anywhere Mem Day Weekend? I wouldn't mind hitting some of the TRT if we could access it (I'm thinking snowpack! / road conditions!).

Wanderer - are you interested in going out this weekend? I haven't made any plans yet but it looks like it is going to be a hot one in the valley so heading for the hills could be a good idea. Anyone else interested in Desolation or TRT? How high can you go without encountering too much snow?

Memorial Day Weekend
Hiya Wanderer,

I'm actually on call this weekend so won't be leaving town. It was voluntary, but the money will pay for some new toys ! ;)

I'm headed to Yosemite with a small group next weekend (Jun 3), and the following weekend I'm considering heading back to Yosemite - perhaps even Mammoth Lakes area. Depends upon the snowpack.

follow up
Hey guys...

I haven't heard back from either of you in the last week and decided to go ahead and formalize my plans.

I'm planning on being on the trail from July 17-27. Starting at Brockway Summit and traveling clockwise. Anyone who wants to join me may. There are a few areas of concern due to snow pass, but should be navigatable by this time.

In case any of you didn't know - you must buy a Tahoe Rim Trail pass which includes overnight stays in Desolation. Desolation is the only location that requires a pay permit from my understanding.

I'll be heading out for a trip next weekend and plan to stop in South Lake to obtain my permit.

Whenever you get your route finalized lemme know. I have to be in Reno on biz Monday 7/25 but I'm thinking of heading over earlier & BP somewhere 7/15-16-17 time frame. No destination for sure yet, maybe I can hook up with you & carry in a beer for ya'!

Tahoe, thanks for your offer for assistance. I think I have everything covered nevertheless (famous last words).

Wanderer... I plan to be in Tahoe that weekend, but not "officially" start until Sunday perhaps. I'm going to do some short hikes around the basin to hang food. Do you have plans yet? If not, let me know if you'd like to explore a bit on Saturday.

Karen... I are you still planning on being in Tahoe this weekend? I'm driving up Friday night, driving the circumference on Saturday to drop food/water, one last good meal and am hitting the trailhead on Sunday morning at Tahoe City. Let me know if you'll be around - my cell number is 916-835-4753.
