The solitude trail begins roughly at Hunter Corral off of Highway 16. The first mile+ is mildly difficult, leading up to Soldiers Field, a vast piece of tundra where one can park cars, camp, etc before heading into the wilderness. Once past soldiers field, the terrain becomes extremely rocky and is mostly uphill, starting off from 4500 feet leading up to roughly 9500 feet about 7 miles in. However, the scenery is fantastic and awe-inspiring, and the wildlife plentiful. During our trip we saw what seemed like hundreds of deer, moose, a coyote and a number of other creatures. The switchbacks, just before heading into Florence Pass, in my opinion, we the toughest piece of the trail. They wind straight up some 500 feet prior to leveling out into Florence Pass. However, getting into the Pass is tough, with the climb over mostly rocky terrain and somewhat dangerous narrow trails. There is plenty of water for filtering to be found, as the trail mostly stays close to the river nearby. There are three minor river corssings one should get past with little or no trouble. Camping sites are plentiful, but once above 9200 feet, there can be no fires. Campers must also be aware to stay a minimum of 100 feet from water sources for sanitary purposes. This is a beautiful trail and manageable for most levels of hiker. Scenery is spectacular, so be sure to bring a camera and plenty of film. Binoculars are also handy for viewing wildlife and scenery at a distance. Most trails are well marked and it is advisable to remain on the trails.
