I did this as an overnighter, going in early, setting up camp about halfway to the river, and hiking down to the bridge with my fishing rod. In late June/early July there's a salmonfly hatch that brings BIG cutthroats to the surface. Afterdinner casting on Blacktail Creek just below the campsite was even more productive with many little fish of all varieties (rainbow, brown, cutt, brook, and hybrids). The traffic is heavy for the fishing, particularly at this time, but the campsite is over a ridge and wonderfully secluded, with good views across the Blacktail plateau. There are also campsites at the suspension bridge at the Yellowstone River, not so secluded. (Remember that you need a permit to camp in YNP backcountry and must camp at designated sites. Blacktail is a good alternative to Hellroaring Creek for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison hike, along the river to Gardner. Less people and no fords. A good day hike even with no fishing.
