Description
This is the most popular hike in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, just west of the Tetons. It's a moderately tough day hike, with good trails and about 3500 foot elevation gain. Table Mountain is topped with a mushroom-shaped rock formation from which you look across Alaska Basin right at the Grand Teton - a sight you'll never forget. I'd recommend camping for a few days just below the switchbacks that lead to the summit ridge, where there are plenty of tent sites and a spring. From there you can do a day hike to the summit (another 1.5 miles and 1500 vertical feet), or to many lakes and ridges in the vicinity. The hike up winds through meadows, with waterfalls and the occasional view across the valley to the Sawtooths. From the long ridge leading to the summit the views are spectacular in all directions: the Grand Teton and Mt Owens to the east with the Gros Ventres in the distance, the Sawtooths to the west, and endless peaks north and south. Though overnight camping is light, be prepared for plenty of company on the main route if the weather's good. In a week-long base camp trip, we saw elk and deer occasionally and signs of a griz. Bring a camera for the marvelous vistas!

Directions to Hike
From Driggs, Idaho take the road toward Grand Targhee ski area, then bear right at a well-signed fork. Follow this road to the end, where you'll find a corral, Forest Service campsite, and several trailheads. Table Mountain has the largest sign and there is often a Forest Service volunteer to answer questions. All trail forks are clearly marked, basically you take the right fork each time you reach a junction.
