Description
You can obtain a Wilderness Camping Permit at the Third Beach trailhead. You will also need a tide chart for this hike.

From the Third Beach trailhead to Third Beach is an easy hike through beautiful coastal forest. After 1.4 mi, the trail drops down to the beach.

Hike south along the beach to Taylor Point. This is the first overland trail. Begin a not-so-easy climb up Taylor Point using rope ladders. The top is a good place to stop, rest, and enjoy the great view. If you follow the small stream at the top of Taylor Point to the edge of the cliff, you can watch it go over as a small (but steep) waterfall. Continue on the forest trail about 1 mi and then back down to the beach.

Continue south to Scott's Bluff. This is the second overland trail. No rope ladder this time, just a rope. However, the climb is not as steep. From the top of Scott’s Bluff, it’s less than a mile of forest trail and then back down to the beach.

Continue south to a small point that can only be passed during low tide. This is where planning your start time will pay off. You’ll have to navigate across some slippery rocks. You may choose to wade if the water is shallow enough.

Then a 2.5 mi hike south along the beach. You will have to climb over a few large rocks and beach logs. The sea stacks are beautiful and you are likely to see eagles, seals, and otters. We actually saw a shark too. When you have reach Toleak Point, you will see a sign for the ranger station, you will see the station nestled in the forest off the beach. Around the bend is a stream that runs into the ocean. Make camp within walking distance of the stream. There is a pit toilet and a storm shelter up the hill to the left of the stream.

The hike should take about 4.5 hours with breaks. If you go during the week you will be all alone. On the weekend, you will see a few other hikers, but there is so much beach, that you can still keep your campsite isolated. This is a great place to spend a few days and the ocean will lull you to sleep every night. You can day-hike south about 2.5 miles to Falls Creek and see a great waterfall. This is also a good place to wash off.

Directions to Hike
