Description
It's an easy hike along a beautiful river. The river is crystal clear & light green in color & is fast moving. There are many mini-trails that take you to the water's edge for a closer look, even though you are almost always in site of the river. This hike takes you over wooden bridges that cross the river. At some points you have to pass fast moving streams that are just wide enough to require that you take two steps to cross.

Camp Handy is at 3.2 miles into the trail. Its a small open meadow where the river bends in a "U" shape which offers a few camping spots. You have the old growth trees behind you, a river in front of you & snow covered mountains behind the river at this camping site.

As you continue on, which I did the next day,the trail gets very steep. The rhododendrums are still not in bloom.

This hike is in the interior of the Olympics. There are narrow walkways that should be carefully traversed, because this area has no trees on it to stop your fall. At this point my hubby & I are at 4,000 ft. Another 500 Ft. or so, we hit snowy patches.

We unfortunaley had to turn around, because there was snow that was undermined by water & was too dangerous to pass.

We completed about 11 miles of this trip. We saw a pair of Harlequin Ducks, rabbits & looking across to another mountain, there were deer muching in a big green pasture with a flowing stream.

Directions to Hike
From Sequim Bay State Park on 101, head 2 miles north to Palo Alto Road and turn left (s.w.). Continue of Palo Alto Road as it turns into Forest Service Road 28. Follow Forest Service Road 28 just over a mile to Forest Service Road 2860. Veer right and follow this road for 11 miles to the large trailhead parking lot on the right, where the road crosses the Dungeness River. (I plagiarized the directions from my hiking book to be accurate). A tip from me-you should find a sign that says Dungeness River 11 miles.
