Description
Naches Peak is the primary mountain overlooking the Chinook Pass area of Mt. Rainier National Park. Directly on the park\'s eastern boundary, Naches Peak offers an inspiring view of Mt. Rainier and the Emmons and Winthrop Glaciers. The best thing about Naches Peak is its proximity to the road and a popular loop trail that encircles it. From Seattle it is a relatively easy drive to reach the mountain, and takes only a couple hours to hike, giving you time to see more parts of the park in the same day. The Naches Peak three mile loop trail offers easy hiking in open flower-covered meadows and is best done in the clockwise fashion in order to take advantage of the views of Mt Rainier. You could also continue along the Pacific Crest Trail on a one mile side trip to Dewey Lake as another option.

Directions to Hike
Naches Peak overlooks Highway 410 at Chinook Pass with Naches Peak to the east of the pass, and Yakima Peak to the west of the pass. You can park at Chinook Pass (5432 ft), or alongside the highway where there is a view point just above Tipsoo Lake. From Chinook Pass, cross the footbridge and follow the trail clockwise around the mountain about two miles through the William O. Douglas Wilderness to the southern flanks. Or, from upper Tipsoo Lake, follow the trail counterclockwise about a mile to its southern flanks. On the south flank, you can hike off-trail to easily gain access to the south ridge which leads to the summit which is a little over a 1000 feet of elevation gain above Chinook Pass. Some scrambling is involved to reach the final summit which might keep some folks from it, but the south ridge offers the same beautiful view of Mt. Rainier.
