A rugged and relatively remote trail between Staunton and Lexington a few miles off of I-81. This area was ripe with iron ore mines up until the WWI timeframe but the wilderness has now reclaimed most of the mining infrastructure left behind. The trail itself crosses the St. Mary's river, splits (and allows you to do a small trip to a scenic waterfall, that even in a drought year was worth the trip) or heads right and allows you to do the circuit hike. The ascent to the top of the hill area is nasty. The ground is very rocky and exposed to the elements. We baked in the august heat last year. A lack of water along the trail is a concern to anyone hiking this stretch. The descent back around was worth the trip. Lots of gorgeous hardwood, and small streams. Mining remains are everywhere along the trail. In two days on the trail we encountered few groups beyond the waterfall. A great trail...I recommend hiking it in the spring or early fall and avoiding the heat of the summer.
