Distances to False Cape campsites from Little Island City Park: Little Island City Park to Barbour Hill contact station, 6.2 miles; Little Island City Park to Barbour Hill Bay or ocean sites, 6.9 miles; Little Island City Park to False Cape Landing bay sites, 8.7 miles; Little Island City Park to False Cape ocean sites, 8.95 miles There are two ways to get in.. Back Bay and the Beach.. both offer great hiking experiences. My son and I went on this hike during the spring and there were no bugs but plenty of wildlife. Parking at Little Island City Park is safe and secure. You park right under a light next to a phone. When you cut through Back Bay you pay $2... We were able to see so much wild life.. Turtles, snakes, Hawks, Egrets, Herons, Deer, racoons and fox just to name a few. We camped on the ocean side near the water... The Privys are EXCELLENT and have a solar powered light at night. Each site area has a pole for hanging you backpack. I highly recommend that you use it.. We had a fox come to our site sniffing for food.. we practiced LNT and we were happy and the fox was hungry... but what an experience. The rangers are super friendly and go out of their way to help if you need it. The only draw back was the walk back... we were passed by N.C. fisherman who are allowed to use the road to haul their catch out and made it difficult to enjoy when they came wheeling by. The terrain is flat... I mean FLAT so it is easy hiking and good to for shake down hikes and taking out the youngsters. Be warned it is primative camping with water available only at the the two sites closest to the ranger station. The other two sites (2 miles back) do no have water so plan accordingly. There are no fires allowed but you can use your stove for cooking and picnic tables are around to use. There are great views of the Ocean and of the bay area and at night the stars are numerous and you can see the ships steaming into the Hampton Roads area.
