This is a fairly tenuous classic hike to the top of Old Rag Mountain, which is arguably the best hike in Shenedoah Park. Being a loop trail, there are two ways to do the hike: either up the Ridge trail, or along Weakly Hollow Fire road to the Saddle trail. Either trail will take you to the top. Although hiking via the Ridge trail is more fun and interesting as the last 1.5 mile is a rock scramble, giving you a true summit feeling. The hike begins with a 2-mile ascent to the rocks. From there it is up and down boulders, through cracks, highlighted by a natural staircase about a 1/2 mile from the summit. Views are spectacular through the entire scramble and only get better at the summit (Where you will struggle to get a picture void of human beings. There were about 50 or 60 people on top when I was there in mid-November.) Once at the summit, take the Saddle trail for 1.5 miles down to the Weakly Hollow Fire Road, then another 2.5 miles back to the parking lot.
