A great hike with plenty of trail to be covered before your hard work pays off. This is a tough trail that should not be taken lightly. Tinker Cliffs is right off the Appalachain Trail and can be accessed from either the North or South route. If you head South the trail is only a little more than 2 miles in, but if you are Northbound the trail is just about a 10 mile hike. If you take the Northern route you will also be passing by McAfee's Knob and you will be able to catch a slight glimpse of Tinker Cliff's looming in the distance. Along the way you pass a shelter and a water source that I suggest you take advantage of. This will be the only water source along the way. The shelter, I hate to admit, is one of the worst mice infested on the trail. So you may want to think twice before staying at this one. But the good news is that by the time your at the shelter your 1/3 of the way to tinker Cliffs, and for the most part the rest of the trail is level, since it is a ridge trail the rest of the way. Once you hit Tinker Cliff's you will either be delerious from the hike, or breathless from the view. Now McAfee's Knob is only a glimpse and if you have any energy left you can explore the cliffs. I recommend this trail for only those with hiking experience. With the limited water supply available you need to know your limitations. I suggest the Southbound route for those who are just starting out or for those who really want to enjoy the cliffs without all the work. In any case this is an awesome place and revered by almost all thru-hikers as one of their favorite places in Virginia, as well as one of mine.
