This trail is nestled in both the Shennandoah Nat'l Park and the George Washington Nat'l Forest. Starting at the parking lot, you ascend slowly to about 2500 feet through winding trails, over creeks and natural springs. Finally you pass the Buzzard Rock overlook to a view across the valley at some excellent rock climbing spots that rarely ever have climbers on them. From here you continue around the other side of the mountain until you come to at least 1 other spectacular overlook. The trail then passes a TV tower (rather unsightly) and then traverses Three-Top Mountain on the Signal Knob Trail. This is a bit more technical than the first portion on the Bear Wallow (there is an escape route to make the hike shorter and less technical that brings you back to your car)but provides you with a spectacular view of an enormous valley the entire way. Back down the mountain and across the valley, over the first mountain (or around it's all up to you) and you're back at your ride. See PATC map G. Find the Signal Knob on the Bear Wallow trail and you can't help but have several circuits of as little as 3, but up to 30 miles of hiking.
