This review is only of the waterfall hike, which I love. This is a less-known trail in the George Washington National Forest. It's a beautiful walk - about 45 minutes one-way - up to a waterfall. Along the way are back country camping spots. The perfect spot we found is around where the train parallels the river right before it heads up towards the waterfall. It's at the base of a cliff and the next to the river, which is cold enough to serve as a bit of a refrigerator. It takes about 15 mins to walk your stuff into this spot, just keep looking to the right of the trail. There are other spots, too, including one close up to the waterfall. it's fun to build a fire and just chill in this beautiful wilderness! I never noticed any mining leftovers. All I have ever noticed are the beautiful trees, the gorgeous rhodendron lining the trail in May, and the beauty of the river up to the waterfall. The waterfall has a deep swimming hole at the base. We have jumped off before, but I wouldn't do that without making sure the water is deep enough first. It's a very easy day hike. Not steep, beautiful meandering through gorgeous woods, and a lovely waterfall. About 2 hours at a meandering pace roundtrip.
