This was a one-night backpack in Shenandoah National Park. We started at the Whiteoak Canyon trailhead somewhere around milepost 43 on Skyline Drive. The forest was very misty, and very beautiful from the start. The views along the trail are spectacular, particularly at the rocky overlook of the 80-foot falls of Whiteoak Canyon. There are lots of cascades and waterfalls along this wild and rugged gorge. We camped along the Cedar Run Link trail, maybe 100 yards from Cedar Run. Deer in the park are very bold, and I could hear them walking around our site during the night. The hike up Cedar Run was beautiful as well, with a lot of cascades and good swimming holes. The trail climbs about 1500 feet in 3.4 miles along Cedar Run, and wasn't as difficult as I expected. We crossed Skyline Drive and took the AT about 3 miles or so back to the point of beginning. The views along the AT are many and awesome. There are incredible views of Hawksbill and the Shenandoah Valley. Overall a great hike, and it could be done in a day if you're in a hurry. Only negative is the number of people, but that's to be expected at Shenandoah.
