A friend and I completed this Sep 2003 38 mile loop hike in northeastern Utah's 150 mile east-west running Uinta Mountains. It begins and ends at the East Fork Blacks Fork Trailhead and is one of only several quality loop hikes around the area. This hike is characterized by open tundra "meadows" under 2,ooo foot cliffs, sweeping views, four 11,800+ foot passes, five major drainages, eight lakes, incredible scenery and to top it off - no people. Literally. In four days we saw only one couple. While elevations in the basins hover between 10,800 and 11,300 feet, the passes range between 11,800 and 12,300 feet. Proper acclimatization before the trip is key. We started at 10am on a Thursday and ended at 2pm the following Sunday. Highpoints are the drop-jaw views on day one on Bald Mountain, the beautiful Red Castle Peak, Upper Garfield Basin, and the view of Oweep Basin from Porcupine Pass.
