Follow the standard hike to Cardiff Pass. It is about 1.5 miles and 1,400 feet of elevation gain to the pass via trail. From here, start scrambling the ridge west up past un-named 10,277. The ridge stays relatively flat with a narrow trail as you close in on Mt. Superior. The ridge steepens and the trail fades, giving way to exposed scrambling. One ledge near the first summit overlooking Alta is only 2-3 feet wide. Stay near the ridgeline, as the mountain is full of loose rock, and accidents have happened here. The first peak, at 11,040 feet is the major peak overlooking Alta...beyond is another peak, with a higher peak behind (11,132 feet - sometimes called Monte Cristo). That highest peak affords the best overall views, especially of the rugged ridge to the west. While the hike is only about six miles round trip, allow a full day for the slow travel. Mountain Goats are almost always seen along this climb. With ups and downs along the ridge, the total vertical climb is a little over 3,000 feet, much of which is not on trail.
