My backpacking buddy Carl F. and I agree that this is the most interesting of the three we have done in East Texas (the others were the Trail Between the Lakes, and the Turkey Creek Trail). There are different forest types and enough changes in elevation to keep things more interesting than the other East Texas hikes. We saw six to eight others along the trail; not enough to spoil the solitude, but enought to have a couple of good conversations. There was evidence of recent hurricane damage in March of 2009, but the trail, trail markings, and bridges were in good shape. The Walnet Creek camp at midpoint was, however, heavily damaged by recent storms - forget it as a place to camp. Bonus: several fishing ponds along the way. Easy caching sites for water where roads cross the trail. We are mid-50's guys and did not find the trail to be taxing. We started at noon on Thursday and got off the trail at noon on Saturday without pushing. We suspect major bug problems after March or mid-April.
