Description
By taking the Dry Ridge Trail from the boat dock, hiking up to to Tuscumbia Trail, across the boardwalk and back north along Azalea Springs trail, one can make a nice 11 mile loop that passes two shelters in this park. The trail begins by moving north just above the high water mark of the lake crossing the upper end on boardwalks and moves back south on the western shore to the Grassy point shelter about one mile from the beginning. The shelters are sound and dry and there is area there for many tents. Water is readily available here from the lake although I expect it would be hard on filters. The trail continues on to the Tuscumbia Bend Shelter that is at a very nice campsite that would hold at least 20 tents and has a small stream running close by to supply water. The shelter has 6 bunks and is would remain dry in a monsson although it can be opened up to catch a breeze in warmer weather. From Tuscumbia Bend the trail travels back east to the Tower (73 feet tall on a 500 foot knoll) allowing a great view of the entire park. From there it continues east across a mile long boardwalk below the dam of the lake crossing a massive cypress swamp allowing a great view of the ecosystem. At the end of the boardwalk it turns north, crossing a gravel road and continues up the lake to the boat dock completing the loop.
