A great hike for those how love up hill. Total gain on this trail is 3460'. Start behind the Ranger Station (1400' elevation). The Trail switchbacks uphill gaining 840' elevation. Cross Rough Ridge then drop 200'. Cross Rocky Fork Branch then continue to switchback uphill for another 560' elevation. From here the trail heads in a straight line up the spine of the mountain to gain another 400' elevation. At 3.4 miles you have reached the top (for now). There are plenty of great views from here for those who want to climb around on the rocks. Continue along the top of Little Fork Mtn. Drop 300' then gain 400'. You are now at Mart Fields Campsite. There is a small spring in the trail just past the camp. From here the rest of the trail is easy. Before reaching the end of this trail you have a chance to bail out back down the Mountain on the Spicewood branch Trail (2.5 miles back to the Ranger station). Or keep on untill you reach the end at Tub Springs Campsite. Now you can head on up to the lookout Tower (ya came this far far, another 200' elevation won't kill ya) at the top of Frozen Head Mtn.(3324' Elevation). Now you can return down either North Old Mac Trail (3.3 mi. to the bottom ), South Old Mac Trail (2.4 mi.), or The Lookout Tower Trail (6.9 mi.).
