My wife and decided to really push ourselves and our equipment with a monster day hike. Elkmont to Clingman's Dome and back to Elkmont in one day. This should have been about 24 miles. We brought our real camping gear in case it did not work out, even though we were planning on a day hike. We started hiking a little before 7. The 3.7 miles of litte river. The Goshen Prondg trail when pretty well most of the way. This trip was in August 2006 and their was alot of bear scat on the trail. (Goshen Prong I believe was the trail that had the Fatal Predatory Bear Attack a few years ago,a freak occurance I am sure but not the happiest thought as you hike in the twilight). After the campsite on goshen prong the trail really starts to climb up the side of the smokies. We Reached the AT and almost made it to clingmans dome before a thunderstorm turned us back at our fixed turn around time of 2:00pm. We made it back to our car about 7:45 that night. Goshen Prong was our main trail most of the the trip except for the 2.4 miles of AT to clingman's dome. The trail has lots of water and challenging but it provides relatively quick access to the AT and The south side of the smokies.
