Old Loggers Path
Outstanding views and abundant wildlife sightings made this a great hike. I followed the recomended counterclockwise route and found the trail to be well maintained and marked. Camping sites are clean and well placed to enjoy the surrounding scenery. Water was plentiful. The trail provides gradual acsents/descents and follows mostly old railroad beds and logging trails bounded by ferns and fragrant flowers. A bear encounter at Doe Run, the first nights campsite, scared both the bear and I and a later encounter with two cubs on day two reinforced the statistics that Lycoming County is home to the largest bear population in PA. I also ran into three does and several snakes along the way. The Sharp Top Vista was worth the climb. I was disappointed to find that the site was accessable by car and several people had set up camp there with all the trappings - ice, chairs, drinks, grill etc. While they were friendly and courteous, I spent the next day and a half dreaming of lemonade and bar-b-que chicken. The second night was spent at Wallis Run and provided a nice overnight respite before pushing on back to the trail head. The third days hike was easy and followed old roads and rail beds to the end where there is a fantastic view up Bear Run.
