The AFT is a 40 mile loop and one of PA's newest trails. It encircles Black Moshannon State Park and is entirely in Moshannon State Forest. It is a very scenic trail, moderate in difficulty, and is bound to become a popular trail. This trail offers numerous vistas, scenic mountain streams, bogs and swamps, thickets of rhododendron and mountain laurel. Plenty of water throughout the trail and several good potential camping spots. Wildlife is excellent with deer, turkey and bear. Highlights are: Sixmile Run (beautiful trout stream), Wolf Rocks, vistas from the Allegheny Front, vistas of Moshannon Creek and gorge, and scenic Black Moshannon Creek and Benner Run. I suggest you park in the state park and hike 2 miles along Julian Pike to the trail, or about three miles along blue-blazed Shingle Mill Trail to reach the AFT. Cars have been vandalized along some parking areas. There is an excellent website: www.aft.altoona-pa.com.
