Laurel Highlands Trail
This trail is a great trail for someone just starting in backpacking. There are many different points to get on the trail if you don't want to thru hike the entire 70 miles. The trail begins in Ohiopyle state park and this section is by far the most difficult with 3 steep inclines the longest is a 1,300 ft incline after that is out of the way the rest of the trail is fairly easy, with elevation ranging from 2800 ft to 2200 ft until you reach the other end where you have a 1100ft decline in elevation at the Seward trial head parking. Camping is permitted only in designated areas on the trail about 8 to 10 miles apart. The camping areas are equipped with toilets, water pumps and lean to shelters as well as sites for tents. This trail offers great views of the Laurel Highlands as well as the Youghioghen River valley. The only draw back is if you are wanting solitude. Sections of the trail are heavely used especially by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops especially in the spring and summer, but if you like to use snow shoes it is a great trail to use them winter on the mountians usually brings abundent snow. Wear bright colors in the late fall and early spring when hunting seasons are in, the trail passes through many sections of state game lands.
