Description
Begins at the end of a forest service road. A locked gate prevents entry. Only residents of Jawbone Flats (an old gold mining town, now being used for educational and research) are allowed to pass the gate and drive back.
From the locked gate, Jawbone Flats is three miles. A beautiful hike along a canyon road.
Beautiful falls and cascades can be seen along this hike.
This hike makes for a great day hike or an over-nighter. Merten Mills (2.2 miles in) is a great as a backpackers camp.

Directions to Hike
South on I-5 out of Portland. Take Hwy 22 to Mehema. Just beyond Mehema, take North Fork Rd. Follow the signs to Elkhorn. Continue past Elkhorn till the road forks. Take the left fork. This is Forest Service Rd. #2209. Follow #2209 to the locked gate. This is where you begin the Opal Creek hike.
