A 40-plus mile hike through the wild and scenic portion of the Rogue River from Grave Creek to Foster Bar. This hike has a great deal of variety for a relatively level, single canyon walk. The trail spends time on rocky benches, in deep forests, passing by remarkable waterfalls, and unfortunately, traverses some of the thickest poison oak in the state of Oregon. Proceed with caution. Be prepaired to enjoy the trip with along with rafters and fishermen who use this river in such numbers that the Forest Service has had to institute a limited entry permit system for boaters. Hikers face no such problem, but may need to share a camp with boaters. All camps feature pit toilets and most of the popular camps offer electric bear fences to keep the critters away from your food. Hikers can also choose to stay at any of a number of widlerness lodges along the way. This is a great hike for early season hikers kept from the high country by heavy snow. In fact, the warm temperatures in the summer may disuade some hikers, though there are several excellent side creeks with great swimming potential along the way.
