My husband and I hike this every year..and it so awesome. We only carry a day pack because we sleep over at the back country lodges. There is a lot to be said for a hot shower, clean sheets, soft bed and sumptous meal at the end of the day. The main thing I want to tell people is that you do not need to have a tour company book these lodges for you...you can do it yourself and save tons of money. The tour companies charge about $500 per person just to make the reservations. We pick up the phone ourselves and make our own reservations and for the two of us it comes out to about $500. This includes the lodging, dinner each night, breakfast the next morning and a packed lunch for the next day\'s hike! Because I have family that lives on each end of the trail we do not require the shuttle service...I think that is an extra $60 or 70 bucks. Anyways, GREAT food, BEAUTIFUL scenery, and lots of wild life (to include black bear and eagles). We hike in the opposite direction than the tour companies book. We start at Ilahe Lodge near Foster Bar and hike about 12 miles to Paradise Lodge. The next day is very short...only about 3-4 miles to Marial Lodge (best food, simplest lodging...and nicest proprietor). Since we arrive early we always take a short nap, munch our lunch, and take a short 2 mile round trip side hike to the historic Rogue River Ranch...so picturesque you will not EVEN believe your eyes!!!!!! The third day is 15 miles to Black Bar and the fourth day is about 11 miles out to Graves Creek. TOTALLY AWESOME EXPERIENCE.
