The backpack trail at Lake Vesuvius is much less traveled than the Lakeside trail. It is hard to imagine that anyone has traveled it recently. The trail was very fun for our group but be aware that there is a lot of poison ivy. Also, there is little to no water available. We purified some from Storms Creek but it could dry right up. On Sunday we took the Lakeside trail back to the cars instead of the Backpack trail and the views of the lake and rocks were great. It rained on us all Saturday but we still had a nice hike that was well worth it. There were just enough hills to give you a little workout but it was not too strenuous. The trail is fairly well marked (with yellow dots) but there are also horse trails and side trails that we did get bewildered at times even with multiple map versions.
