This trail leads from the southern Adirondacks through the middle of the park, ending in Lake Placid. The elevation change is very moderate: the trail follows passes and valleys. The trail's best features are the remote lakes and wild rivers it visits, most with lean-tos or campsites at picturesque spots. Water is plentiful all across the trail: one need only carry enough for three hours at the most, and nearly every camping site has good water nearby. Waterproof boots are a must on the trail: even in dry conditions, there are muddy spots to contend with, and it's uncommon for ten days to pass without precipitation. Most large streams are bridged, but some streams may have to be waded. The terrain is rugged, with many areas of exposed rock and roots. Most end-to-end hikers take between nine and fifteen days to finish the trail. It has been done in less, and the lean-tos are spaced for several different inteneraries. Anyone frustrated by the bedlam of the overcrowded high peaks will enjoy the rugged solitude of this trail.
