Algonquin Peak (5,114') is the highest peak in the MacIntyre Range and the second highest peak in New York State after Mt. Marcy. From the summit- views of Mt Colden with its slides and dike, Lake Colden, Avalanche lake, Marcy and other high peaks. You can do side trips up to Wright Peak, where there is wreckage of a B-47 bomber scattered near the mountain-top. Iroquois and Boundary peaks are unofficial trails from the summit of Algonquin, marked by cairns. The summit is 4 miles by trail from the Heart Lake/Adirondack Loj trailhead then 2.1 down a very steep trail to Lake Colden interior outpost. If you camp at Colden, beware the bears...There are a few lean-to's in this area, but they fill up early. The return is another 5 miles or so, through spectacular Avalanche pass - ladders, boulders and bridges along the edge of the cliffs, over the lake. Take a dip in Avalanche lake - be warned, it's cold! The trail levels out for an easy return via Marcy Dam. Showers at Adirondak Loj, or a swim in Heart Lake behind the Loj!
