The Long Path begins on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. For the first 40 miles it follows the Palisades Escarpment along the Hudson River. The trail then enters Harriman State Park where it intersects the Appalachian Trail. It then travels over Schunemunk Mountain and the lowlands of Orange County reaching the spectacular Shawangunk Ridge. It passes dramatic cliffs favored by rock climbers and beautiful waterfalls. It then passes into the Catskill Forest Preserve climbing over the top of 9 of the highest peaks. From the Catskills the trail takes a hiker through State Forests through Schoharie and into Albany County where it ends at John Boyd Thacher State Park. The Long Path links suburban backyards with wilderness areas, pre-Revolutionary iron mines with fast-food restaurants. From the Piermont Marsh at sea level to Slide Mountain, 4180 feet higher, the Long Path combines challenging climbs with gentle walks. There are 15 lean-tos along the trail and many nearby campgrounds and motels. The NY-NJ Trail Conference publishes a guide to the trail.
