Description
The trail starts on an old fire road and is clearly signed from start to finish. After about 1/2 mile on the fire road you cross Jones Creek. May be dry in the fall. You come to a sign that indicates the loop trail. I reccomend going right at this point due to a severe 2 mile long incline. Going right, you hike through a pine forest on a gradual incline. After about a mile the trail exits the forest and crosses a sage covered ridge, over the ridge it winds down into the forest again along a canyon wall descending to Whites Creek. At 2.5 miles an old jeep road comes to the trail from the right. Get on the jeep road by staying left and following the trail signs. A gradual uphill hike takes you to the Mt Rose Wilderness Boundry located about 1 mile from the start of the jeep road. Shortly after the boundry the trail crosses to the North side of Whites Creek, no bridge to cross on, bring some sandals or the like. The trail continues up the canyon on the North side of whites creek along the sandy bottom of the old creek bed. About a mile from the last creek crossing the trail crosses the creek again, once again without a bridge. You continue along the base of Mt Rose up over a short ridge and cross the creek again, this time on an old foot bridge. Now the trail starts a climb of about 1.5 miles up to the top of a high ridge. At the top of the ridge a spur trail goes right off the main trail to Church Pond about 1 mile round trip from the main trail. The spur trail is clearly signed. The views from the ridgeline are pretty good. You can see the valley below that you just came up out of all the way to the Carson Valley and Sout Reno.
Now, prepare for a two mile descent to the start of the loop. About 3/4 of the way down the descent, the trail exits the Mt. Rose wilderness. At the loop sign at the bottom of the descent, turn right, the way you came and return the half mile to the trail head.
Keep in mind, bikes are not allowed in the Mt. Rose wilderness area.

Directions to Hike
Going south on 395 out of Reno, about 4 miles south of Reno turn right on HWY 431, the Mt. Rose HWY. Drive about seven miles to the south entrance to Galena Creek County Park. Stay on the paved road. Follow the signs to the trailhead parking, about 3/4 mile from the park entrance. Horse trailer parking on the right and car parking on the left.
