This was an 11 mile loop hike on 8/27/04. Nelson Crag Trail is a relatively little-used trail going up Mt. Washington. Accessed by about a mile on the Old Jackson Road, part of the AT, you find stunning views just over one hour into the hike from Pinkham Notch. The trail requires rock scrambling and at higher elevations it could be difficult finding the next cairn in heavy fog. I was rewarded with wonderful views on a beautiful warm day on a very rough trail... I would not take young children on this one- only hikers in good shape. I came down via Boot Spur Trail, another rugged trail with excellent views. A hiking staff was definitly appreciated. Oh yes, toilets water AND a restaurant at the top, plus rides down the mountain on the stage for the weary (you'll have to hitch back to your car though, about 3 miles south.
