If you\'d rather not see many people, don\'t visit during school vacations! This is a beautiful hike which satisfies the crunchy outdoorswoman in me--yet kids and older people find that even they are up to the challenge of the trail. I have hiked it at dusk, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the rain, in the ice, in the fall, even while strapped to my father\'s back when I couldn\'t walk yet...I am never disappointed. I have been surrounded in a gaggle (?) of wild turkeys, and have admired many bright orange salamanders (newts?) on my way up. I have even had to hurry past a bee\'s nest someone had disturbed. It is a special place I take every one of my special loved ones to. The little streams and cool thickets one passes through are delightful. The several stops which overlook the surrounding area are breathtaking. The trail is clearly marked yet nature makes herself apparent as well. Even on an overcast day--it is a great pleasure to be immersed within the soft, moist fuzziness of a cloud, or looking DOWN on a a bird in flight from above it, or on a raincloud which is raining on the land below but not upon you. At night, animals become active and the camping experience is complete. Set the tent up before dark! If someone has not hiked before, do not feed them immediately before the climb becuase you will see it again soon. There is a neat, stocky little man who has hiked one of the trails everyday for the past decade. He is quite friendly, a humanitarian, and a nature photographer. Once one phsyically fit person becomes familiar with the trail, it can take as little as 45 minutes to the summit. If you wish to attend say the sunrise Easter service or another special service at the nearby quaint old Cathedral of the Pines, this is also well worth any sort of drive early in the morning to be in attendance. In addition, I have found other close-by little NH churches extremely welcoming. Youth groups like to book a retreat center at the bottom of Mt Manadnock, and they have a pool at the retreat center too. There is a sugaring (maple syrup-making) house run by one of the elder generation at the very base of the mounatin too, and if you visit and ask questions, get comfy because you will recieve an accurate lesson.
