It's a very picturesque and rugged hike eminating from the North Unit of the Teddy Roosevelt National Park (less crowded than the S. Unit in Medora). The Ackenbach trail starts at the deepest into the park you can get by car. It overlooks the Ox-Box of the Badlands. From there the terrain is steep and rugged all along the Little Missouri River(more than adequate water supply). You can pack along the river or wander off into the badlands themselves. The geology of the area is exquisite and the buffalo, antelope, rattlesnakes (few) and petrified trees, and Badlands themselves all add up to a feast of the eyes to partake. There are two variants of the trail, itself and a northern route. Either route offers it's own ominous look at the variations occuring between the opposing rock faces of the Badlands walls.
