This is a challenging but beautiful hike through the badlands. Campgrounds are about 20 miles apart and have potable water sources. There is no potable water outside the camps. "Flowing Wells" on topo-maps are actually cattle watering holes out of which you can filter water if they are not too dirty. Do not count on water being available outside the camp sites. Do NOT attempt to hike after rain - the soil is mostly clay and the trail becomes dangerous and impassable after just a single storm.
