The southern terminus of this somewhat remote trail is off the AT, about 3 miles south of Deep Gap in the Nantahala National Forest. I was out there aroung the end of June to early July 04. The trail is not heavily traveled. There were some fairly overgrown sections. I had the trail guide by J. Ray and M. Skove. I would have gotten lost without it. Their trail guides have a high degree of detail and are very accurate. The Chunky Gal Trail ends at Tusquittee Bald and intersects the Fires Creek Rim Trail. It has a few difficult elevation changes, eg. 3000 ft in 2 miles from Bob Allison Campground to Tusquittee Bald. I saw one black bear, one wolf, one garter snake, no people at all. My rating of 3 for this hike was heavily influenced by the heavy rains and severe winds I had to endure for good part of the trek. I'd like to go back when the weather is better and finish exploring the Fires Creek area.
