The foothills trail(FHT) is actually 85 miles long and traverses NC and SC along the border most of the way. The FHT has one end at Table Rock SP at one end and Oconee SP at the other. I hiked the section in the middle about 35 miles. The reason I chose the stretch from Laurel Valley to Whitewater Falls is because it covers a lot of scenery especially waterfalls and rivers. This hike can be strenuous but the trail is very easy to navigate and is extraordinarily maintained. The section I hiked is the most remote on the trail and is very beautiful. The terrain is steep gorges entering one leaving another as you hike. Varied environments include dediduous forest up on the ridges to deep dark rain forest evergreens in the bottoms and valleys. In the entire 35 miles I left the sound of falling water only once and that was while i was in Gorges State Park. Recommendation: Winter is probably the best time for weather and berable temps. I hiked this stretch in July and faced 93 degree days, high humidity and ferocious flies, gnats and mosquitoes.
