This trail is often as much of a climb as it is a hike. You ascend and descend along this steep ladder and cable aided-trail to McRae Peak and then to Calloway Peak (highest peak in the Blue Ridge range). It can be an in-and-out hike, or you can hit the Daniel Boone Trail and continue on from Calloway Peak. There are some backpacking sites (permit required), but the trail cuts through some very narrow rock passages where you'd have to remove and drag your pack through them. This trail has spectacular views, to say the least. It could be treacherous in wet weather, and hikers should be prepared for rapid weather changes especially around the peaks. You need to pack in plenty of water and plan on hiking only 1 to 2 miles per hour.
