I started out on July 11, 2005 at Wayah Bald, highest point on the Bartram Trail. A beautiful hike, passing by Nantahala Lake. The last 5.1 miles from Winding Stairs up to Cheoah Bald is fantastic. Ledbetter Creek provides an almost continuous show of slides, chutes, and falls along the way. Cheoah Bald lives up to its billing as providing some to the best views in the Southeast. The trail was well marked and maintained. Also if you are looking for a bit more solitude it is much less traveled than the AT which crosses the Bartram both at Wayah Bald and Cheoah Bald. You could use the AT to make a loop but I elected to backtrack. Some nice side trips can be made into the Appletree Camp trails as well.
