Description
It's only two and a half miles, but it's all up-hill at a pretty good incline. You gain 2,400 feet over those two and a half miles so leave some time to hike it.

Incredible views from the top of the entire Beaverhead Valley area. You can see all the way to the Bitterroot Mountains. The first part of the climb is off-trail. The trail starts at the treeline and cuts through rock (so you don't have to scramble to the peak). Stay on the trail because there are some false peaks. If you decide to off-trail-it and scramble up the side you will be heading in the wrong direction. Besides, the rocks are pretty unstable. There's wind shelter at the top. You can see the all the Pioneer peaks (Torrey, Tweedy, Sawtooth), it's beautiful and very do-able as a day hike (though it can get hard if you're not used to steep climbs at a high altitude).

Directions to Hike
Take 278 West from I-15 near Dillon, MT. Heading west you will go about 4 miles when you will turn right on Argenta Road (there will be a sign that says Argenta). Take this road through Argenta and after Argenta go about three miles. Take the left split (heading southwest) onto FR 2400. Take this road about seven miles. The road will turn 270 degrees and head down hill. Before you head down hill (at the point of the turn) there will be a place to park off to your left. You should be able to look up and see Black Mountain. Head off-trail straight up that ridge across the street from you (between where the road bends).

The first mile or so is off trail but just follow that ridge up until you hit the treeline and the rocks and you should have to cross the trail (keep your eyes open and look down, but it should be fairly obvious. The trail cuts right through the rock). If all else fails, stay left of Black Moutain peak and you'll hit the trail.

Be careful coming down, though, make sure you head west enough before heading down hill your you'll end up coming down a steep gulch and have to walk southeast back up the road to your car. (Guess how I know that.)
