The trail is 5.5 miles one way if you set off from the picnic area near Swiftcurrent Lake, but there is a boat service that can make the trail 3.8 miles one way that can be taken from Swiftcurrent Lake and then its a 100-200 yard jaunt to the next boat dock on Lake Josephine. But i opted for the 11 mile route. The trail follows along side of Swiftcurrent Lake with views of Many Glacier Lodge and then along side of Lake Josephine and near the end of Josephine the trail turns up the canyon and begins climbing 1600 ft to the glacier. The incline is not as bad as it may seem; its a gradual 1600 ft. The views are some of the best of the park, looking across the valley at cascades and the neighboring mountains. When you climb him you begin to see Grinnell, Salamander and Gem Glaciers. But the views looking down on Grinell Lake and up to Grinell Falls are amazing. It is well worth the effort. And this is bear country. I accidentially ran into a griz who was munching on some shrubs no more than 10 feet off the trail, so make lots of noise. Human noise is the best; talking, clapping, singing. Bear Bells and Bear Whistles are more anoying than they are effective, take them if you want, but make noise. One of the best day hikes in the park.
